Long sword

What is historical fencing?

Historical fencing describes the study and art of swordsmanship from the 13th to the 21st century. Fencing was originally developed as a safe method to train swordsmen for combat, but as weaponry modernized, there was less need for trained swordsmen and fencing transitioned into a competitive sport (modern day Olympic Fencing). As a historical fencing club, we continue to educate students in the original methods used for combat. Our focus is not on competition, but in strategies for self-defense.

What do I need to start fencing?

Nothing! We provide all of the required gear to students in our beginner classes. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing for exercising and bringing a water bottle; we will provide the rest!

We encourage our students to purchase their own gear once they move into the intermediate classes. You will need a vest, glove, mask, foil, and fencing bag. Please ask if you have questions about purchasing gear, we are happy to point you in the right direction. you can also rent gear from us for $10 per month.

What if I am unsure about fencing; can I try it?

Absolutely! We welcome visitors to observe a class if they are curious and we offer a 4-week trial of our beginner lessons. Learn more about our trial course here.
